Lisbon, ME Area Guide

Welcome to Lisbon! Lisbon is a part of Androscoggin County and is also part of both the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan New England City and Town Area. Lisbon, which also includes the village of Lisbon Falls, was once known as the “Most Industrialized Town in Maine” due to its large cotton industry, but the town has since diversified and includes world-known companies like Knight Celotex, Floor Systems, The Dingley Press and Furniture Superstore.

History

Lisbon was settled in the early 1600s when Oliver Moses, John Tebbets, Edward Plummer and Galen Moses banded together to organize a stock company for manufacturing purposes at Little River Village. They purchased mill privileges at the Upper Falls, bought the Thompson property, built a dam and began manufacturing cloth.

The community was originally part of Bowdoin, a township within the Kennebec Purchase. When a vote was taken to divide Bowdoin into two separate towns in 1798 many inhabitants argued that they had to travel almost ten miles to get to the town meetings and thus could not attend. On June 22, 1799 Lisbon became incorporated under the name Thompsonborough in Lincoln County under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

On December 21, 1801 Thompsonborough voters agreed to change the name of the town to Lisbon. Noah Jordan submitted a petition to the General Court citing the reason of the name change as a result of “the inconveniency in the length of the name”. On February 20, 1802 the Town of Thompsonborough was officially changed to the Town of Lisbon. Today Lisbon is the third largest community of the fourteen communities in Androscoggin County.

Parks and Recreation

Lisbon offers many beautiful parks and recreational opportunities. Come enjoy the open spaces that Lisbon has to offer!

Beaver Park
There are various year-round activities held in Beaver Park for families in Lisbon. April marks the beginning of open fishing in the stocked ponds in Beaver Park, and people come from all over the surrounding areas to catch fish here (the fish limit is two per person under the State of Maine Fishing Laws). The ponds are also good for swimming in the hotter months, and an ice skating area is maintained on the Middle Pond during the winter months. The park also includes two picnic areas, two softball diamonds, seven miles of hiking and skiing trails and a fitness course.
